Google Earth can see clearer now.

Google Earth has updated the satellite images Bombay and Delhi and Bangalore. So I logged on and took a look. Delhi is still the red dusty city, but its fun seeing the India Gate and the Parliament House areas. The Bahai Lotus Temple looks awesome, and the Qutab Minar etc. Bangalore I know nothing about.. Bombay - They have the higher resolutions of areas only south of Haji Ali so far.. But its great seeing those and many more...

- An article in the TOI talks about the google maps satellite images showing the strategic military/airforce/naval bases. And man, it is in such detail. Specially at Navy Nagar in Bombay. I counted 5 submarines, a couple of aircraft carriers and so on.. incredible detail! Hehe, talk about "Spy-ware" :D. Well, I guess Google is soon gonna get a notice of some sort from the respective governments to blur out the details on those areas. Just on a hunch, I flew over to Karachi to see if there were any defense installations visible in Pakistan and YES, there were!! :D

- The high resolution images of Bombay show, very cleary, the snarl of the jhoppar-patis (slums) near some of the poshest areas in the city. Its quite a sad image actually, the juxtapose of the jhopparpattis, a mere stones throw away from The Taj Hotel or from Colaba.

- Now I know why the Bombay taxis all have yellow roofs!! So that they can be clearly visible from satellite images. They actually look really cool, look around the VT area (Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus). (see picture)

- Chowpatty looks really clean!

- Marine Drive looks awesome.

- 1st time ever getting a look into the Malabar Hill Parsi's Tower of Silence.

Here's a snapshot of VT. Notice the taxis as little yellow dots... Click on the pic for a larger image. I didn't want to upload a pic of the navy docks! Hehe.. paranoia.

A Tribute

For the past 3 weeks or so, I've been listening to these New Orleans songs that I've kinda compiled as a tribute to that great city.. The songs are in one way or another related to N'awlinz .. some are Jazz.. some aren't but are still classics... Thought I'd share this playlist with you. Grab the songs if you get a chance... they're good.

When I was thinking about a New Orleans tribute playlist, I realised just how MANY songs there are that have something to do with the city...

Here are some of them - in no particular order:

Walkin' to New Orleans - Fats Domino
City of New Orleans - Arlo Guthrie
The Battle of New Orleans - The Dirt Band
Louisiana 1927 - Aaron Neville
New Orleans is Sinking - The Tragically Hip
New Orleans Lady - Louisiana LaRue
Mardi Gras in New Orleans - Fats Domino
Perdido Street Blues - Louis Armstrong
Louisiana Saturday Night - The Dirt Band
Do You know What it Means to Miss New Orleans? - Louis Armstrong
Naive Orleans - Anberlin
One Night In New Orleans - Povertyneck Hillbillies
Jambalaya - Hank Williams
House of The Rising Sun - Leadbelly ? / Wood Guthrie?/ Dylan :)

Got the idea of a compilation from a NYT article.. which I cannot find anymore.. but I'd love to get my hands on that Jazz comilation that the article was referring to. Oh well, 'nother day.

B. B. King - September 8th, 2005

September 8th, 2005
Mullins Center,
University of Massachusetts, Amherst

B. B. King, on his 80th birthday tour, proved that age is no factor when it comes to singin' the blues. Here's how it happened...

Kenny Wayne Shepherd started off the night on the right note, just whetting the audience's appetite. Kenny and his band played a long set of a great mix of rock and blues. (Sorry, no complete set list ). His guitar finely honed guitar playing was a fantastic experience and the lead singer, Noah Hunt, did justice to the rest of the band with his strong vocals. The band's one hour set included the excellent numbers like "Shame, Shame, Shame" which was immaculately delivered by Noah Hunt, "Deja Voodoo"and an awesome cover of Voodoo Child. It could have been Jimi Hendrix right up there on stage with his axe! Kenny Wayne Shepherd is definitely a guitarist and a performer to keep an eye on. As B. B. King said, these are the youngers that will keep the blues going. But I'm getting ahead myself here..

I'm glad they had the half hour or so of a gap after the opening show. We definitely needed the time to digest the music and clear our heads for the main act! :) .. First on stage was his band, or should I call it his Jazz orchestra? We had four wind instrumentalists, two guitarists, a drummer and a mean pianist first walk onto the stage and give a rousing jazz intro to herald the arrival of...
Ladies and Gentlemen, The Blues Master, The Man Himself, The King of the Blues, Misterrrrrrr....
B. B. King....

80 years old, and he walks onto the stage like he's still a sprightly 50. Other than being seated centerstage throughout the performance (coz of his diabetes) no one would have guessed that his man had been playing the blues for the past 70 odd years. His voice is a roar when he needs to and he can make his guitar, Lucille, wail like the banshee she sometimes is. His performance was the best I've ever seen from a musician. Just by looking at him, his expressions and his movements, one knows that he feels the music, he is the music. His face screws up with his guitar notes and his shoulders are dancing while he's seated. Makes you feel that, if not for his knees, he'd be up on stage giving Mick Jagger a serious run for his money! And the best part of the concert, by far, was the rapport that he develops with the audience. He loves his audience and his audience adores him. It was like being in a room with him, and like we were a small group of people seated around him with him telling us his stories and singing to us. Or it could have been around a campfire.

I could go on forever trying to describe the experience. But no words can describe a B. B. King concert. I'll just try to tell ya'll the highlights as I remember them...

So he comes on stage, waves, bows, sits, and hammers out some instrumentals... I guess he wants to get our attention - as if he needs to!!!!
Then he speaks -
"Thank you for sticking around for an old man..."
Yeaaaaaaaaaaaa.. cheeers from the audience..
"They tell me this is my 80th year.
Some say it's my last."
Boos and "NOOOOs" from the audience.. and he says -
"That's what I told them too!"
That basically set the trend for the evening. I think it'd be fair to say that he spoke more than he sang! But what a speaking it was, and when he sang.. what a singing it was!!

I couldn't get the entire set list.. coz there were obviously songs I didn't know, but more so coz of the fact that many of them were just pure blues instrumentals.. which gave me Goosebumps!! However here is a sampling of the songs in the (rough) order it was played.. again, there are some gaps in this list.. so if anyone stumbles onto this and wants to fill in the gaps, please do so.

  • Why I Sing The Blues
  • Nightlife ------He starts off by talking about Willie Nelson and how his favourite song by him is "Always On My Mind". So we all expected him to sing that, but instead he played Nightlife. Which was very very cool also!
  • All Over Again
  • Love Comes To Town ------ He got a good laugh out of the meager audience response the first time he started to sing this song, and then with his encouragement, he had us all bellowing along with him to this one. BTW, It was a really small audience surprisingly. I'd say about 3000 people tops!! But that didn't faze B B King at all..
  • Ain't That Just Like A Woman ----- So he starts off with his love for women and all that... about how he'd sit in the street in Memphis, playing his guitar and looking at the pretty ladies. And he goes "I've got two doctors and a nurse to take care of me.. Dr. Viagra, Dr. Cialis and Nurse Levitra". Then for the song, he asked the men to take permission from their significant others to sing along with him.. :D.. but with the caveat that they'd have to go without supper that night if they were brave along to actually sing along..Wow, did he stretch this one out! But it was hilarious and worth every stretching. What an entertainer.
  • You Are My Sunshine ----- Followed up the last song with this one being "... for the ladies". This was so slow and nice and mellow .. Goosebumps again..
  • Key To The Highway ----- He talks about Eric Clapton at this point. Talks about Ridin' With The King.
  • The Thrill is Gone ---- sighhhhhhhhhh
  • Please Accept My Love
  • I Know

I've got only 10 of the many other songs that he played here. These are the songs I recognized.. there were a bunch of instrumentals and numbers which I had no idea about. So if anyone has a more complete set-list from that night, I'd sure appreciate any inputs.

Nidhi, Lava, Razvan & Fransesc were the company I had.. and it was a terrific show. Worth every cent of that arm and leg that I had to shell out for prime seats. :D

I think he created a few new blues fans that night! I did overhear someone saying that she was a convert.. and then some people I know personally! ;)

p.s. sorry about the poor pictures, my camera couldn't deal with the low lights..

The detailed description above definitely shows how much you enjoyed the concert.. :)

Joke ----

Recently a guy in Paris nearly got away with stealing several paintings from the Louvre.

However, after planning the crime, breaking in, evading security, getting out and escaping with the goods, he was captured only two blocks away when his van ran out of gas.

When asked how he could mastermind such a crime and then make such an obvious error, he replied:

"I had no Monet to buy Degas to make the Van Gogh."

solitude...

O SOLITUDE! if I must with thee dwell,
Let it not be among the jumbled heap
Of murky buildings; climb with me the steep,-
Nature's observatory - whence the dell,
Its flowery slopes, its river's crystal swell,
May seem a span; let me thy vigils keep
'Mongst boughs pavillion'd, where the deer's swift leap
Startles the wild bee from the fox-glove bell.
But though I'll gladly trace these scenes with thee,
Yet the sweet converse of an innocent mind,
Whose words are images of thoughts refin'd,
Is my soul's pleasure; and it sure must be
Almost the highest bliss of human-kind,
When to thy haunts two kindred spirits flee.

Vaishali's wedding pictures

The paparazzi brothers - Chhimi Jigme and Chhimi Penjo - took about 25,000 pictures during Vaishali & Vicky's wedding.

That's probably why they are taking so long to post the pictures! :)

Here are some pictures that have already been posted:

- Chhimi's website .... The Wedding Album

- Roshan's pics (engagement ceremony and all)

- Penjo's website (with the hope that he adds the pics to his album rather than doling them out one by one on his PAD.)

****UPDATE**** Penjo's site now features photographs and video! In a kewl flash presentation!

Am back

Alritey folks..

I'm back.. Just to let ya'll know.

The previous post was a quick pic taken with my phone and posted from Vaishali (Aunty) and Vicky's wedding venue.. So you can blame the phone's camera for the poor resolution. Hopefully Chhimi and his brother will have more pics up once they get back...

All in all, t'was a fun trip.. to NJ as well as Virginia and Baltimore. Met up with school folks and Kalimpong/Darjeeling folks. Good fun. And the wedding was really nice. Elegant ceremony and all that..

More later I guess.. with links to pics.. no pics of my own... with Chhimi's and Penjo's mammoth professional equipment there was no need for amateur picture taking.

Back to reality now.

From Nola.com - 9/1/2005, 12:13 p.m. CT - AP

An old man in a chaise lounge lay dead in a grassy median as hungry babies wailed around him. Around the corner, an elderly woman lay dead in her wheelchair, covered up by a blanket, and another body lay beside her wrapped in a sheet.

"I don't treat my dog like that," 47-year-old Daniel Edwards said as he pointed at the woman in the wheelchair. "I buried my dog." He added: "You can do everything for other countries but you can't do nothing for your own people. You can go overseas with the military but you can't get them down here."

"lord of the flies in NOLA"

New Orleans is in such a mess right now... Katrina came and went, and now there are other woes... the poor city.. what's with this place?? One city in the whole country that I like for its originality, freshness, 'differentness'.. and damn if the wrath of God isn't on this place!!!

Anyway, there's some guy who's stuck on the 10th floor of some building with very very frequent about New Orleans.. with Webcam feeds and all.. check it out.
http://www.livejournal.com/users/interdictor/

The situation seems really bad there... with the looting and all... Poor NOLA.. get back on your feet plz.. am glad it wasn't like this when I was there a year ago, almost to the day! --shudder--

-- I came across a picture that I'd taken last year in a gas station (don't ask me why), about this time of the year, and the price of gas was $2.01. Today, I filled upgas at $3.12!!!! that hurt!! it hurt bad!! I gotta drive about 800 miles over the weekend, all the way to Virginia and back... Impossible prices. oh man, this is gonna hurt!!!!

-- Speed. Processor speed. Important. Very very important. :) I guess I kinda hung in there for quite a bit with an 800MHz Duron.. running at 100MHZ FSB Freq.. But that was gettin' to me.. I mean, I'd like to listen to music and work at the same time wouldn't I? :)... So sweet sweet new processor came in today.. spent the evening backing up my huge HDD.. being paranoic.. and then pluggin the new processor in. Sweet Jesus.. speed is good.

-- By the way I have converted. I am a Pastafarian now. Find out what it is. .... Of course I haven't converted. I would've but this thing has become such a fad that it almost sux.. altho its still hilarious! :). Check out the Flying Spaghetti Monster and the pastafarians at http://www.venganza.org/ ... and for those of you who have no idea about the creatonists's "Intelligent Design" bull, please read up on it.. PLEASE!!!! .. In fact, EDGE has published the text from Daniel Dennett's Op. Ed. contribution to NYT last week.. Read here at http://www.edge.org/3rd_culture/dennett05/dennett05_index.html

-- i was really in a mood to rave and rant today.. the day's just been crappy.. started with a totally unfair email.. and went downhill.. until i decided to just stay put at home and do nothing!! no contact with the outside world!!!

oh well... i'll spare the rants.. am suddenly bored of typing.. It is 4am and i've written a lot.

1 Comments:

*hugs* Its fine to rave and rant.. Everyone does it all the time.. so why shouldn't you?
