Harry Potter - the phoenix one

"And don't take too long, Weasley, the delay on that firelegs report held our investigation up for a month."
"If you had read my report you would know that the term is 'firearms,'" said Mr. Weasley coolly.

----------
"Department of Mysteries," said the cool female voice, and left it at that.
----------
Am reading Harry Potter's 5th year.. Order of the Phoenix.. Came across these two funnies in a chapter.. I thought it was specially witty.. maybe I wont think that when I see it tomorrow.. :)

If you've read it, you'll get it.

The books are getting better... darker... not really targeted towards kids anymore.

Question though....
Somebody answer this and put in a comment for me plz...
The reptilian horses ?? Only the ppl who've seen a death can see the horses right? Thats why Harry Potter sees the horses this time on the way to Hogwarts coz he saw Cedric die... BUT... after Cedric died and all that (end of the Goblet of Fire) Harry Potter and the gang take the same coaches back to the train, but the horses are invisible to the Potter guy then?? He only sees them after his vacations??? hmmmm?? Am I missing something? Harry Potter experts required to help me out.. vishu baini ??? :)

I had more to write, but i'm forgetting.. too late to be blogging anyways.. maybe tomorrow..

The Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan

The Constitution of the Kingdom of Bhutan

A 54 page document with 34 articles, the draft constitution for Bhutan was released on March 26th and released to all citizens. It is available online at the above link.

I haven't had the chance to read it fully yet, just a quick perusal.. I'll most likely post any opinions and thoughts I have up here on this blog.

Stage fright

I have regular readers for this blog.... !!!! scareeeeeeeeeeeeee .. repeat visitors for my junk postings?? (Sidebar - looking at it from a different angle, is this getting to be an exhibitionism, voyeurism kinda thing?? )

I have this feeling that that knowledge alone is going to affect the quality, trend, style of my postings. hmmmmm.. Sidebar - does this make it an epistemological question? does my knowledge of this knowledge invalidate or limit what i want to say..... hmmm .. scratch head... scratch head... give up

Am thinking out aloud now huh.. I've always been writing knowing that people would read.. but will that change if I know that i know the audience???????????? will i unconciously be limiting what i talk about or divulge ? or will i overcompensate (like i feel i'm doing now?). oooooof...

Oh well... does it matter..:).. What's a little stage fright!! I'll forget I have an audience.. remember what i said about a wide open journal?

Reminded me of the classic by The Band ( ya i know i'm making a big deal of it)...

Your brow is sweatin' and your mouth gets dry,
Fancy people go driftin' by.
The moment of truth is right at hand,
Just one more nightmare you can stand.

See the man with the stage fright
Just standin' up there to give it all his might.
And he got caught in the spotlight,
But when we get to the end
He wants to start all over again

:)...

Looking for Donors for Kalimpong Archer

There is this 13-yr old archer from Kalimpong. Paril Lepcha. She is very talented, lotsa medals and victories in various state and national championships. Having proved herself in these, it is time for her to move on to larger things - international competitions. And a lot of people believe that she has the talent and the calibre to be able to do very well.

However, she cannot take this next step due to an acute lack of funds. She needs better (and more expensive) equipment. The international competitions require the use of modern fibreglass bows and carbon-tipped arrows. So far she has been using, believe it or not, home made bamboo equipment, and has been winning with that!!!

It is this financial hurdle that she has to cross. And to help her attain her goal and give her a chance to excel, there is this drive to raise funds for equipment for her. If any of my readers are interested in helping out, please send me an email. Or visit this URL for information and a presentation about Paril. http://www.kalimpong.info/paril/

Every bit counts... I have no idea how much has been raised so far, but I'll find out and post it here. So make your contributions. It is for a good cause.

Charity begins at home. Kalimpong is home.

Snowboarding in Vermont

Saturday, 19th Mar 05, We went to Stratton Mountain in Vermont - Cosette, Romeo, Lava and myself for skiing/snowboarding. Siri and Satyam went off for their cross-country skiing.

Was a perfect day weather-wise for skiing.. and other than having to park 2 miles away and the steeeeeep lift and rental prices.. the resort was pretty good. We realised that we were snowboarding after a year, almost to the day (my ski lift ticket from last year was still on my jacket). And that explains why my muscles are still sore, 3 days after.

But we had some really good runs.. didnt spill as much and overall was quite damned good..

Spent the night at Siri's cabin .. abt 30 mins from the mountain.. pool, ping-pong, drinking games, jam sessions, horror stories... regular stuff that one does in cabins in the middle of the night in the middle of nowhere.. :).. did manage to wake up with a hangover.. ;)

OBVIOUSLY overslept on Sunday... late long lazy breakfast.. lots of chatting.. and the day was suddenly over.. oh well. back to real life again...

check out the pictures.

It's funny cause around the same time I went skiing and had almost the same events.. only that they were in the Berkshires!

Silouhette Silhoutte Silhouette

Silhouette: sil-hou-ette
noun
Etymology: French, from Etienne de Silhouette died 1767 French controller general of finances; perhaps from his ephemeral tenure
1 : a likeness cut from dark material and mounted on a light ground or one sketched in outline and solidly colored in
2 : the outline of a body viewed as circumscribing a mass

Who'd have thought this word would have such an obscure etymology??
And this is a difficult word to spell huh??

Do weekends count?

Is time wasted during a weekend wasted time indeed? Or are you supposed to be productive these two days? Am I supposed to get a great sense of achievement by catching up on my laundry, or would I feel better knowing that since it is the weekend, I can get away by ignoring the mundane chores? This whole weekend concept is very confusing. I would like to think that the weekend has been given for people to rejuvenate from the week and recharge yourself for the next week in this grind called life. But now one is pressurised into being productive in other areas: clean, cook, wash, mow, shovel, dig, shop, change oil, call... If so, when can I be really idle? Just sit and stare out into space without the gnawing feeling deep inside saying that I have to and should be doing something...

I like idleness... I don't think that's a sign of laziness.. but idleness rocks. And as Jerome K. Jerome (Idle thoughts of an Idle fellow) said - Idleness, like kisses, to be sweet must be stolen. He nails it with the statement. To really enjoy being idle, one must have lots to do, so that that idleness can be appreciated. So that essentially confounds my crib about being idle without guilt. OK. Idle with guilt is good. Idle without guilt is lazy, purposeless and a burden on society!! :)

No all this does not mean that I have wasted my weekend. (For the benefit of my higher ups). I have been productive and not in the domestic sense but in the work sense!! Yup, weekend of Spring Break and I'm still slogging.

I need a life.

Haiku for the week:

dash dot dash dash

HAHAH... idleness... it's funny but I kinda love the concept too.. just that the perfectionist in me used to nag me saying there are a million to dos on your list..

But I think I don't care anymore.. Have learnt to look at the list.. then the time in the clock.. and say ye watever!

Not again, please...

GNLF threatens Opposition

Statesman News Service
DARJEELING, March 10. - A belligerent GNLF today offered a "golden opportunity to the hill youth" for agitation, at the same time warning that "all the security of the state cannot protect the Opposition".
The ruling party, clamouring that their president Mr Subash Ghisingh be made the caretaker of the DGAHC, from today began indoor meetings (deferring to the order for no-microphone during school Board exams) that will eventually cover all the 28 constituencies of the council.
Addressing one such meeting here at Capitol Hall, Mr Dipak Gurung, president, Darjeeling GNLF branch committee, hinted that the time to resume agitation for Gorkhaland had come. "A golden opportunity for the hill youth is opening up - to agitate for Gorkhaland. A Gorkhaland without agitation would be tasteless. The youth have a chance to make history (by agitating)," he said.
Notably, Mr Gurung in his affidavit in the High Court last month had accused "extremists", including Opposition leader, Mr Madan Tamang, of raising the demand for Gorkhaland. He had also affirmed in the affidavit, which was on behalf of Mr Ghisingh too, that the councillors were not one with the extremists on the demand for Gorkhaland.
Mr Gurung today openly threatened the Opposition with violence. "Bengal will not be able to provide enough security to the Opposition. They will be finished within the month of May," he declared.
The party rallied behind Mr Ghisingh, claiming that their president was "100 times more clever than any leader of Bengal." Referring to the tripartite talks among the Centre, state and the DGAHC, Mr Gurung also promised that Mr Ghisingh would "most certainly achieve something or the other by May-June."
Interestingly, the senior party leader noted that the state government cannot amend the DGAHC Act, when the tripartite talks were on. It may be noted that the government is set to amend the Act next week, for setting up a dispensation to run the DGAHC, after the term of its General Council expires on 26 March. Mr Gurung said that there were no changes in the party's bandh plan. The GNLF is planning to hold a bandh, which would last for 93 days, and would be staggered over four months. The first "installment", a 72-hour bandh, is scheduled to start from 16 March.

----------------------------------------------------

Again??? Create history by agitating ?? or re-create a sad and pathetic history of agitation - goondaraj, economic meltdown, taking the area back to the despair of the 80's...

and this is after the hills are finally re-emerging from the sorry past - getting it's act together economically - tourism and related businesses are finally picking up - helped by the fact that other tourist destinations (Nepal, coastal areas) are being avoided right now. Life is back to normal. Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Kurseong and these hill towns no longer bring memories of strikes and curfews and ruined vacations and ruined educations.

I only hope that the populace somehow will reject this new move. It might be naive of me to presume such, but I would think that the local population is not in favor of the present demands of the GNLF. Even if they may be, I do not think that they want to have to experience these unreasonable strikes. But do the people have a voice? With the specter of violence, it is easy to coerce the population into submission.

The call for violence, in the above article, is aimed at the youth. I only hope the youth are not so gullible and stupid as to fall for these rhetorics. The youth should now realise that with such calls, they are just being used... they are being provoked by the rabble-rousing politicians, and all for the vested interests of one power-hungry, selfish, delusional megalomanic and his troupe of sycophantic hanger-ons. This one person who, after 17 years, has nothng to show, and now is in fear of losing his sinecure... and he will if the will of the people do prevail and the democratic process is followed. So hence the threats for an "Agitation". Putting the fear of disrupted lives and economies into the hearts of the hill population. Are we Bihar?? How can they get away by coercing the compliance of the rest of the population.

I just hope that people have had enough of this bull and will not allow this trend towards strikes and violence to materialise.

1 Comments:

GNLF/Gorkhaland - damn having lived through that crap - it is just sad that it is coming back. Remembering those god awful strikes where our school would run out of food. But as kids we thought how cool no school.. Ghisingh - never thought I would hear that name again.

Life goes on

I'm back. I really do not know how to start this off without resorting to some hackneyed phrase, so I'll just leave it at that.

Problem;
Insomnia is a terrible and debilitating disease.

Rants:
It is so easy to mouth platitudes... so easy to spew out the words of the wise... to give out the best advice... Yes, goddammit.. I know what you are saying is right!! You think I'm stupid???? Of course it is good to do this and to do that. Of course I SHOULD do this or do that.. God, I did not just emerge from a self induced exile of 28 years, absolutely naive, uneducated, unworldly or stupid! so what's with people and unsolicited advice?? Its insulting. Yayayayaya youre my friend, you care for me and you are only trying to help and do whats best for me.. you know what world?? leave me alone if you want what's best for me.. keep your oh-so-wise collected-memorised-heard-read-second-hand advice to yourself and you will be respecting me.

Question:
When does a hobby stop being a hobby?

Question:
What good is all the knowledge in the world without the ability to act? How does one act? Is there always a motivator?

News:
The past week has been rough. With some up-times, but rough mostly. And the weather still sucks.

Resolutions:
I realise that some of my audience (??) may be of an impressionable age so I will refrain from being too liberal with my language in my posts. This does not mean I will go back and edit all my prior posts. I'll just cross my fingers.

Wordpress is still an uphill battle.. be warned!!

Expert help needed.. Apache/PHP

I need some help here from the experts.

I am running a webserver on a WinXP box. Apache 2.0.50, MySQL, PHP4 installed.

Anyway, for my installation of Wordpress 1.5 I am getting some errors most probably to do with mod_rewrite.

I looked at my httpd.conf file and it has the '#' in front of LoadModule rewrite_module modules/mod_rewrite.so removed, so I'm pretty sure mod_rewrite is enabled. In addition, my configuration file for my Gallery says that mod_rewrite is installed.

However when I look at the phpinfo() (in a phpinfo.php) file on my server, it does not give me any data at all about Apache or its installed modules!!! My website has been working fine with PHP and MySQL and everything for the past 6 months or more. (See http://www.anujpradhan.com). So I am not sure what's happening with my Apache or more specifically my mod_rewrite.

Anyone have any hints??

I am not too good with any of these and have been surviving so far on excellent help from the net and pure luck. Now I need some seriously technical expert advice and would appreciate any help.

If you need I can put up the contents of my httpd.conf file and/or the output of the phpinfo().

Also, while we are at it, can some one goto this post and help me out here too.. Wordpress-1.5 permalink .htaccess apache mod_rewrite help!!

I'm sorry comments are disabled in this blog, but please send me an email anujkpATyahoo.com if u are brilliant and kind and know the answers!!

Snow again!!! and its March... disgusting

The post topic should warn that I'm in a cribby mood!!!

We are going to get up to a foot of ugly, nasty, heavy, wet snow..

my mood:

People talk about blogs as their "online brains" (or was that del.icio.us) ... (and while i'm ranting, lemme add that searching for and referencing (hyperlinking) every borrowed/ learned/heard/plaigarised phrase/idea/article/term/song/link/site that i mention is a pain in the ass and i will only do it if i feel inclined to.. and right now i'm just lazy and cribby.)...

So anyway, I was talking about blogs being online brains..
maybe, and online journals and online bare-your-soul media...
But for me its just a let-off-steam-media.. i dont know who reads this crap i write anyways... and since i've forgotten how to write on paper, (i only know how to type nowadays), it's the best way to say something that you feel and get it over with.. take the weight off..

But again, too many stories about people losing their jobs and all that on the net due to stuff on their blogs.. Maybe one should have a totally anonymous blog.. That'd work great, but I'm too late for that.. plus, isnt blogging about letting people know about you?? Ya, its like leaving the front door to your house open wide with a sign that says:
"Please come in, check out my journals and my thoughts and frustrations and likes and dislikes and my music and my photographs and my family's and friends and check out my life and if anyone want to impersonate me (for whatever reason) all the information is right here... " Scary thought!

I should make myself paranoid enough to take anujpradhan.com offline now.. or maybe i should find a theme to blab about from now...
